it a prime place to live and work.
Situated along the Snake River at the western edge of the Rocky Mountains, Idaho Falls has all the features of big city living, but still embraces a small town charm. Our skyline consists of the majestic Teton Mountain Range, and in our backyard is the world's most famous park - Yellowstone. On a broad, placid expanse of the Snake River, Idaho Falls has preserved an area we call the "Greenbelt." With a 6-mile paved trail, joggers, cyclists and pedestrians alike are offered a view of the local wildlife as well as the falls.
Sink your fly into world-class fly-fishing holes in the Snake River, enjoy a ballpark hotdog while watching our minor league team, the Chuckers”, or play any of four championship caliber golf courses. The Caribou/Targhee national forest east of town is the weekend playground for hikers, off-road enthusiasts, mountain bikers, snowmobilers, campers and fishermen. If that isn’t enough for you take a drive and visit the bison, elk, moose, wolves and bears in Yellowstone National Park or Grand Teton National Park, a couple short hours up the road.
When compared to other cities and metro areas of the West, Eastern Idaho's cost of living is generally lower. For necessities such as groceries, housing, healthcare, utilities and transportation, costs in Eastern Idaho are often 20 to 50 percent less than in other areas. For example, the average home in Idaho Falls is priced at $133,814, while in Los Angeles, CA and Denver, CO the average home prices are $853,900 and $353,064, respectively
Idaho Falls is situated on the valley floor astride the Snake River at an elevation of 4,744 feet above sea level. The dryness of the climate seems to temper the hot and cold temperatures that can occur in this part of Eastern Idaho. The residents of Idaho Falls enjoy a semi-arid alpine climate. The summers are extensive and mild which is ideal for fishing, biking, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, barbecues, and floating the Snake River. July nights are typically in the low 50s while the daytime temperatures range in the mid 80s. Fall on the valley floor is generally peaceful and gorgeous. January temperatures range from 27 degrees in the daytime to an average of 10 degrees at night. Winters are comparatively long, but not severe. Spring tends to be short in Idaho Falls with a below average growing season. You need to plant your garden early to ensure success.
Bonneville County was the fourth largest county in the state. The 1994 population of 79,197 has steadily grown over the decade to 89,653, an increase of 13.2 percent or 10,456 people. The county experienced a decrease between 1995 and 1996, when large layoffs came from the main contractor of what is now the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), a decrease of only 68 people. The largest increase in the county (2,416 people) is seen between the years of 2003 to 2004. Economic diversity and concentration in economic development continue to help the area grow. From population estimates at the 2000 census, Bonneville and Jefferson counties together qualified to become a metropolitan statistical area, now called the Idaho Falls MSA. Idaho Falls, the county’s largest city, is the third largest city in the state at 52,148 people as of 2004.
