From Alpine, WY, take US Rt. 26 west 2.6 miles to campground
sign.  Turn left at sign into campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 5,800 ft.

The campground, located on the southeastern side of the Palisades
Reservoir, is composed of two unnamed loops.  One loop is heavily
wooded with Lodgepole, Blue spruce and Aspen with a grass
understory and a few sites overlooking the Palisades Reservoir. 
The second loop is considered an overflow area (not included in
survey site count).  Both loops have vaults and potable water. 
US Rt. 26 does produce some traffic noise throughout the
campground.  There is good privacy between camping sites.

The parking aprons are gravel.  There are two RV waste stations. 
One is at the northern end of the Palisades Reservoir off US Rt.
26 at the Palisades Dam Power Station.  There is no fee and no
potable water.  The other is in Alpine Junction at the Chevron
gas station, intersection of US Rt. 89 and US Rt. 26.  There is
no fee and no potable water.

convenient to the campground.  The reservoir is used for

CAMPGROUND NAME: Big Elk VISIT DATE: 07/31/2000 STATE: Idaho REGION: Intermountain RANGER DISTRICT: Palisades NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Irwin RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or DIRECTIONS: From Irwin, ID, take US Rt. 26 east 5.8 miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 262). Turn left at sign onto Rt. 262 (dirt) and go 1.6 miles to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 5,800 ft. The campground, near the northeastern portion of the Palisades Reservoir, is composed of two sections. The larger section is located across from the group campground which is used for overflow when not reserved. This section has widely spaced camping sites among sagebrush, Aspen and Douglas fir. The interior road in this section is tear-drop shaped making a second pass-through difficult for large RVs. The smaller section is a single loop in an open field next to Big Elk Creek. The campground is well away from the traffic noise of US Rt. 26 and has no direct access to the Palisades Reservoir. Turn right at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 5,800 ft. The campground, located above and adjacent to the Palisades Reservoir on the northeastern side, is composed of two sections. The upper section is a single loop on a bluff above the reservoir among Aspen and Lodgepole pines. The sites are well shaded with a dense middlestory providing good privacy between camping sites. Some of the sites overlook the reservoir. The lower section is adjacent to the boat ramp at the reservoir's shore. All of the sites are side-by-side back-ins with fire rings and tables and no shade. CAMPGROUND NAME: Calamity VISIT DATE: 08/03/2000 STATE: Idaho REGION: Intermountain RANGER DISTRICT: Palisades NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Irwin RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777DIRECTIONS: From Irwin, ID, take US Rt. 26 east 2.5 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign, crossing over the Palisades Reservoir Dam, and go 1.1 miles to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 5,800 ft. The campground, adjacent to northern end of the Palisades Reservoir and located on a mountainside, is composed of three loops - A, B and C. Loops A and B can accommodate RVs and tents with many sites wide enough for a boat trailer. The camping sites in these loops are more open, some of which are terraced with tent pads. Some have a view of Palisades Reservoir. Loop C is restricted to tents and slide-in RVs. It is furthest up the mountainside with some sites having great views of the reservoir. The sites in this loop are heavily wooded - none are in the open. The campground is a boater's paradise, and as a result, it is very popular and full most weekends. It's a good idea to make reservations if camping on a weekend. The campground is loaded with berries, namely huckleberries, raspberries (in Loop C), serviceberries and snowberries. Although overall this is a very nice campground, Loop C is without a doubt the nicest of the three loops. Except for Loop C, privacy between sites is minimal to fair. CAMPGROUND NAME: Falls VISIT DATE: 07/29/2000 STATE: Idaho REGION: Intermountain RANGER DISTRICT: Palisades NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Swan Valley RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation DIRECTIONS: From Swan Valley, ID, take US Rt. 26 west 2.9 miles to Falls campground sign (Forest Rt. 076). Turn left at sign onto Rt. 076 (dirt and gravel) and go 2.4 miles to another campground sign. Turn left at sign and go 0.1 miles to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 5,100 ft. The campground is a large single loop through a stand of tall Cottonwoods and is located where Falls Creek joins the Snake River. None of the sites have a view of the river. The camping sites are well spaced, and with the height of the Cottonwoods, shrubs and grass, privacy is very good. Although this section of the river does not offer whitewater sports, it can provide pleasant float trips for the whole family, especially in the autumn under fall colors. NOTE: This campground is actually in the Caribou National Forest, but it is administered by the Palisades Ranger District of the Targhee National Forest. Turn right at sign onto Rt. 87 (gravel) and go 6.7 miles to first section of campground or continue another 0.3 miles to lower or second section. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 5,800 ft. The campground is composed of two widely separated sections. The first section is very small (5 camping sites) with heavy middlestory and overstory of mixed conifers and shrubs. The interior road in this section is very tight making it well suited for tenters. The second or lower section of the campground stretches out along the Palisades Reservoir's southwestern shoreline. This section contains all the pull-throughs and boat ramp with most of the camping sites having a view of the reservoir. A heavy middlestory in both sections provides excellent privacy. NOTE: The campground is in the Caribou National Forest, but is administered by the Palisades Ranger District, Targhee National Forest. Turn left at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 6,600 ft. The campground stretches up through a stand of mixed conifers as a single lane that loops around near State Rt. 31. An understory of wild roses and other shrubs plus well-spaced camping sites, provide good privacy. Traffic noise from State Rt. 31 is evident throughout the campground. The campground is a nice overnight stop in route to or from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Turn right at sign and go 0.4 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 5,300 ft. The campground, located near the base of the Palisades Dam at the northern end of the Palisades Reservoir, stretches along the northern bank of the Snake River in open fields dotted with clusters of Cottonwoods and willow shrubs. The campground has a dispersed feel and appearance. Being right off US Rt. 26, the campground is good for an overnight stay. NOTE: The campground is "owned" by the U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, and administered by the Palisades Ranger District, Targhee National Forest. The campground, near the crystal clear Big Springs, is a single loop running through a stand of young Lodgepole pine. All the camping sites have pull-through aprons with limited shade and privacy between sites is fair. Nature walks are held Saturday evenings; check fee board for locations, time and subject. Boat rentals, showers and laundry available at intersection of S. Big Spring Ave. and US Rt. 20 in Island Park, ID. Although the campground is not adjacent to Big Springs, it is well worth the short walk (0.1 miles) to see. Water pours (120 million gallons a day) through the lava stones like a well designed fountain, into a pool that is crystal clear. The bottom of the pool is speckled with black pebbles of black absidian. Big Springs is one of the 40 largest springs in the country and is a major source for Henry's Fork of the Snake River. The water originates from the Yellowstone Plateau and maintains a year- round temperature of 52 degrees. The kids (and adults) will enjoy watching the huge Brook and Rainbow trout swimming at the bridge. Unfortunately for anglers, fishing is not permitted in the vicinity. Turn left at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 6,200 ft. The campground, composed of seven loops - A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, is located primarily in Lodgepole pine of various ages. Each loop has some camping sites that either overlook or are adjacent to Buffalo River, which is popular for fishing and family floating. There are communal grey water disposal sites throughout the campground. Loops A and B are the closest to US Rt. 20 where traffic noise is apparent. These two loops also have paved interior roads and parking aprons, some tent pads, numerous pull-throughs and flush toilets. Loop C is the most heavily wooded with electric hook-ups, tent pads and paved parking aprons. Loop D has the least cared-for appearance and gravel parking which create a rustic feel. This loop has vaults and flush toilets which are shared by the campers from Loop C. Loop E, called the Reunion Loop, is for groups and is not included in this survey. Loop F has a pleasant mixture of Aspen and Lodgepole pine with a heavy middlestory providing the best privacy between sites in the campground. This loop also has vaults and flush toilets and paved parking aprons. The sites in Loop G are more open than those found in the other loops. It is closest to the wheelchair friendly fishing dock and is comprised of grass and sagebrush understory and Lodgepole pine. It has a flush toilet and paved parking aprons. Although wildlife is not often seen during the warmer weather, the number and variety of birds is delightful. It is not unusual to find an Osprey perched on a snag across the river from the campground looking for dinner or to spy heron standing at the river's edge. Informal "beater" trails connect the loops and provide access to the river. Nearby lodges provide an excellent opportunity for a cook's night out. The campground has two sections. One section is to the right of the campground entrance along the base of a hill. The camping sites in this section are slightly larger than the second section with cement pads for the table and grille and tent pads. The second section is on top of the hill and is composed of one loop and a spur. These sites have a more rustic, less manicured feel. Both sections are shaded by Douglas fir. The understory and middlestory are minimal resulting in little privacy between camping sites. The section at the base of the hill attracts the overnight camper off the Interstate while sites in the hilltop section are most often occupied by the longer-term camper. The nearby 6-mile Stoddard-Van Noy multi-use trail is a popular destination for many of the campers with ATVs. NOTE: The campground is physically located in Wyoming. The campground, located at the edge of Jedediah Smith Wilderness and near the backside of the Grand Teton National Park, is a large loop through two very different environments. The first part winds through a very dense Douglas fir grove of trees along the Teton Creek. The area is darkly shaded with little understory away from the creek's bank. The other part or section is in an open field with lots of wildflowers and a few Aspen. The towering cliffs and mountains can be seen only from this section. The scenic setting and two challenging trails that begin next to the campground make this campground one of the more popular in the area. For the drive to the campground, the Grand Teton National Park's three dominating peaks are prominent on the skyline. The campground, divided into two family sections which are separated by a small bridge, stretches out along a shore of the Warm River. A group area is located between the two sections where a number of tent sites are also located. The first section has older, larger trees, which are Weeping willows, gravel aprons, and a gentle slopping bank. The second section, located above the river, has little shade, paved aprons, and tables and grilles anchored in cement. The campground's appearance is manicured with nicely trimmed lawns and trees. The Warm River is a gentle flowing river providing excellent float or tubing activities for the whole family. There are several hiking trails nearby with the Upper and Lower Mesa Falls available for a day trip. All the tent sites are walk-ins. While the majority of the tent sites are located near the group area, there are some that are more secluded and private in the second section. Most of the camping sites are either adjacent to or overlook the river. Firewood is available for a fee. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. Camping in and around Yellowstone is an awesome experience but there are a few things to be careful of. Wild animals, especially females with young, are unpredictable. Keep a safe distance from all wildlife. Each year a number of park visitors are injured by wildlife when approaching too closely. Approaching on foot within 100 yards of bears or within 25 yards of other wildlife is prohibited. Please use roadside pullouts when viewing wildlife. Use binoculars or telephoto lenses for safe viewing and to avoid disturbing them. By being sensitive to its needs, you will see more of an animal's natural behavior and activity. If you cause an animal to move, you are too close!

Campgrounds in Yellowstone Park

Bridge Bay Campground • Bridge Bay is situated near Yellowstone Lake, 30 miles from the East Entrance to Yellowstone. It's also conveniently adjacent to Bridge Bay Marina/boat launch and store. Canyon Campground • You'll find this campground close to the breathtaking Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone near the center of the park. Camping in this area, offers stores, restaurants, pay showers and a coin laundry, but no utility hook-ups. A gas station, as well as repair service, is available

Grant Campground • This woodsy campground is located at the southwestern edge of Yellowstone Lake, 22 miles north of the South Entrance. Within a half mile, you'll find stores, restaurants, pay showers, a coin laundry, and a sanitary dump station, but no utility hook-ups. Group sites available.

Madison Campground • A central location for camping in Yellowstone National Park, this site is just 14 miles east of the West Yellowstone entrance and 16 miles north of Old Faithful near the junction of the Gibbon, Madison and Firehole Rivers. Offers a sanitary dump station and limited group sites but no utility hook-ups or showers. Madison Campground Yellowstone National Park is located 14 miles east of the West Entrance and 16 miles north of Old Faithful. Madison Campground Yellowstone National Park is not far from the Old Faithful area and in a wooded spot along the Madison River. Open from early May to mid-October, Madison is a popular pick for a vacation camping spot. You'll find Madison Campground, a beautiful camping spot along the Madison River, will meet all your needs as the perfect central home base for a Yellowstone National Park vacation. It is a favorite of fisherman in the fall because of the trout spawn wich brings many large fish up from Hebgen Reservior. Photographers love it in the fall also because of its proximity to the easily photographed bull elk during the fall rutting season. Fishing Bridge RV Park • Situated by Fishing Bridge near beautiful Yellowstone Lake, this RV Park features sites with full hook-ups. It's designed for hard-sided units only with a maximum length of 40'. The area also offers a coin laundry, pay showers, store, electricity, water, sewer, hook-ups and a sanitary dump station. A great site for your camping experiences. Sightseeing tours are also available.

Indian Creek Campground • Indian Creek campground is located mid-way between Mammoth and Norris, near Sheepeater Cliff, in the northwest quadrant of the Park. Because of bear activity, special restrictions are often placed on this campground. Indian Creek Campground is open from early June to mid-September. Listen to the wolves howl at the night when staying at Indian Creek Campground Yellowstone, the perfect place to camp out and sleep under the stars during your Yellowstone vacation. The most liberal fishing regulations in Yellowstone are in Indain Creek and the Gardiner River close to the campground

Mammoth Campground • Mammoth Hot Springs camping is the only Yellowstone campground open year round. Located at a popular part of Yellowstone National Park, it is in close proximity to a number of beautiful geothermal features and plenty of outdoor recreation. Mammoth Hot Springs Campground is located near the Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces and is five miles from Yellowstone's North Entrance. Pebble Creek Campground • Pebble Creek Campground in northwest Yellowstone is in the heart of the easiest place to see the wolves. It's in close proximity to some great hiking as well as some wonderful fishing spots in Soda Butte Creek, the Lamar River and Trout Lake. Open from mid-June to late September, it makes a summer or fall vacation something special. Pebble Creek Campground is located in the northeast corner of Yellowstone Park, 9 miles west of the Northeast Entrance. Tower Falls Campground • Tower Falls Campground, in Yellowstone south of Tower Junction, has plenty of attractions nearby, like Tower Falls and the Tower-Roosevelt Petrified Tree. it is ground center for viewing the Black Bears for which the Tower area is famous. Tower Falls Campground is located in the Washburn Range in Yellowstone's northeast portion, 2 miles south of Tower Junction. No reservations are required at Tower Falls Campground as it is first-come, first-served. For a nice central location within Yellowstone National Park, you will find Tower Falls Campground meets your every need, from fabulous outdoor recreation to nearby natural attractions.

Lewis Lake Campground • Lewis Lake Campground is on a wooded hill near Lewis Lake, providing a peaceful setting but still close to Grant Village and the many facilities there. Close to the lakeshore and in the woods, the Lewis Lake Campground in Yellowstone National Park is the ideal spot to stay when fishing the waters of this fabulous lake is your goal. Open from the middle of June to early November, it is one of the last to fill. This makes it fairly easy to get a nice spot. You need no reservations for Lewis Lake Campground Yellowstone.
