Cody Wyoming Trail Rides
No trip to the Old West of the Absaroka Mountains or Great Plains of the Bighorn Basin is complete without a horseback ride through the mountains of prairie. Seeing the magnificent Absaroka views from horseback the same way the early explorers traveled, will create a lasting connection between you and the Bighorn Basin landscape. Few mountain ranges are more dramatic than the Absaroka: soaring alpine peaks that rise 5,000 feet above the valley, clear lakes, numerous waterfalls, and diverse flora and fauna and on horseback you become part of the landscape instead of a gazer upon it. Horseback riding is a popular activity here and is one of the best ways to view this corner of the old west. You can rent horses or participate in guided rides through many scenic areas. Many ranches throughout the Cody region offer horse rentals and riding expeditions into Yellowstone National Park. Whether for just an hour or half-day ride or extended pack trip expedition deep into the wilderness, there are combinations of activities that can also be included, such as fishing, rafting and hiking. You can even participate in a cattle drive! I like to bring my own horse and if you chose to do the same check first to make sure where in the park you can take a horse and other pack animals. If you find Yellowstone too restrictive or inaccessible Cody’s Absaroka Mountains are outside the park and provide excellent riding opportunities outside the jurisdiction of the National Park service. The whole perimeter of the park provides wonderful riding opportunities as well and share the same views of the Absaroka’s. The Shoshone National Forest has hundreds of miles of trails to explore so find a horse and take a ride.
